Hojo Undo Traditional Strength Training

28 June 10:00 16:00

Hojo Undo is a traditional form of strength training commonly practised in most Okinawan karate styles, and certainly in Okinawan Goju-Ryu karate. In the time of its founder, it made up an important part of training time. What is particularly interesting is the far-reaching integration between Hojo Undo and the principles of karate practice as a whole. This concerns not only external technical integration, but also the integration of principles relating to body, breath and mind, as is emphasised throughout traditional karate.

In the West, many forms of “supportive training” have also been developed. These forms of training are often based on a different perspective, use different training tools, and so on.

During this training day, Sydney Leijenhorst will focus on transmitting the traditional exercises and principles, supplemented here and there with perspectives on modern tools and principles.

In 2027, we will organise a full weekend during which we will also invite speakers and/or trainers to further explore the overlap and complementarity of traditional and modern principles and methods.

Although some preparation is useful, it is not necessary, as the structure of the day will include sufficient rest moments, suitable weights can be chosen, and attention will also be given to optimal recovery.
